Subaru Added Security offers two main mechanical breakdown plans: Classic and Gold Plus. Both are backed by Subaru of America and honored at any Subaru dealership in the country. The difference is in what each plan covers — and choosing the right one depends primarily on how long you plan to keep the vehicle and how much of its technology you rely on daily.
At Mid-Hudson Subaru, the finance office walks buyers through this comparison regularly. The decision is not complicated once the coverage structures are laid out side by side.
Quick Answer: Classic covers Powertrain plus six major system categories. Gold Plus covers virtually everything — Classic and Powertrain included — plus all EyeSight, STARLINK, DriverFocus, and electrical systems. If your Subaru has EyeSight (nearly all current models do), Gold Plus is the more complete plan.
- Classic: Powertrain + Cooling & Fuel, Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Electrical, A/C
- Gold Plus: Everything Classic covers, plus EyeSight, STARLINK, DriverFocus, Blind-Spot, and hundreds of additional components
- Both plans include Towing Allowance and Rental Car Allowance
- Gold Plus adds Trip Interruption coverage (starting at 50 miles from home)
What Classic Covers
The Classic plan builds on the Powertrain Coverage tier — engine, transaxle, and differential components — and adds six major vehicle systems:
Cooling & Fuel — Radiator, heater core, engine fans, fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel tank, and fuel sending unit. Water pump is included. Fuel injection system components are also covered.
Steering — The steering rack assembly and all internal parts, steering column shaft and coupling, universal joints, power steering pump, and associated seals and gaskets.
Suspension — MacPherson struts, transverse links and control arms, shafts and bushings, ball joints, steering knuckles, wheel bearings, and stabilizer bar hardware.
Brakes — Master cylinder, power brake assist unit, ABS and traction control systems, wheel cylinders, hydraulic lines and fittings, disc brake calipers, and seals. Note: brake pads are excluded as wear items.
Electrical Systems — Alternator, voltage regulator, ignition coil, starter motor and solenoid, wiring harnesses, engine management control unit, power door locks, sunroof motor, power window motors and regulators, power mirror motors, windshield wiper motors, heater blower motor, instrument display, and switches.
Air Conditioning — Compressor, clutch and pulley, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, blower motor, compressor seal, and receiver/dryer.
Classic is a strong plan for buyers who are primarily concerned with mechanical systems and are not relying heavily on Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology.
What Gold Plus Adds
Gold Plus includes everything in Classic and Powertrain, then extends coverage to the rest of the vehicle. The additions that matter most for current Subaru buyers fall into four categories:
EyeSight and ADAS Systems — EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Reverse Automatic Braking, and the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System are all named explicitly in the Gold Plus agreement. These systems are not covered under Classic.
STARLINK Systems — Both STARLINK Multimedia and STARLINK Safety and Security hardware are covered under Gold Plus. This includes the infotainment head unit, navigation hardware, and the telematics module that powers emergency connect and remote services.
Extended Component List — Gold Plus also covers hundreds of additional components across every system category: turbocharger housing and associated oil lines, all-wheel drive control components including DCCD systems, additional cooling system sensors and pipes, transmission paddle shifters and control modules, front strut mounts and crossmember hardware, and additional electrical items from ECU units to power seat motors.
Trip Interruption Allowance — Exclusive to Gold Plus, this benefit provides up to $500 per occurrence for hotel and meals if a covered breakdown occurs 50 or more miles from home. Most third-party plans require 100 miles; Gold Plus starts at 50.
How to Decide Between Them
Choose Classic if:
- The vehicle has limited or no EyeSight/STARLINK content
- Your primary concern is mechanical drivetrain and major systems
- You are keeping the vehicle for a shorter term and want foundational protection
- Budget is the primary constraint
Choose Gold Plus if:
- The vehicle has EyeSight (standard on virtually all current Subaru models)
- You use STARLINK navigation or connected services regularly
- You plan to keep the vehicle for five years or more past the factory warranty
- You take road trips where Trip Interruption coverage has real value
For Hudson Valley buyers, the trip interruption benefit is worth considering specifically. Driving from Poughkeepsie to Vermont, Pennsylvania, or upstate destinations regularly puts you past the 50-mile threshold where Gold Plus hotel and meal coverage activates in a covered breakdown situation.
Both Plans Include These Core Benefits
Regardless of which tier you choose, every Added Security plan includes:
- Towing Allowance — An allowance toward towing costs if a covered component failure requires a tow
- Rental Car Allowance — Up to five days of rental car coverage if the vehicle must be kept overnight for a covered repair
These are not sold separately — they are included in both Classic and Gold Plus.
Asking the Question at Mid-Hudson Subaru
The finance team at Mid-Hudson Subaru can pull the specific component list for both plans relative to the exact vehicle you are purchasing or recently purchased. For Hudson Valley buyers in Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, and Beacon, an Added Security enrollment conversation is available both at time of sale and within the post-purchase enrollment window — ask a finance advisor for the current timeline.
