For Long Island, the Ford Bronco’s hard top is the better year-round roof, the black cloth soft top is the better summer roof, and the new-for-2026 Dual Tops option lets you have both on select 4-Door models. Which one you get depends on trim, body style and whether you are willing to store a roof in the garage. This guide sorts out every Bronco roof choice and what each means for Nassau County weather.
Bottom Line: Hard top for insulation, security and snow; soft top for weight and quick open-air days; Dual Tops if you want the hard top for winter and the soft top for July without buying one aftermarket.
- Carbonized Gray molded hard top is standard on 2-Doors and optional on 4-Doors; the black cloth soft top is standard on all 4-Doors
- Painted hard tops (body-color, Shadow Black, and special-edition colors) add a sound-deadening headliner
- Dual Tops: a soft top is included in the vehicle alongside the hard top on select 4-Door trims
The Molded Hard Top: Standard on 2-Doors
The Carbonized Gray molded-in-color hard top is the Bronco’s default hard roof. It is standard on every 2-Door and optional on 4-Doors, and it includes a rear-window defroster and washer. On 2-Doors it also includes the sound-deadening headliner; on 4-Doors the headliner is an add-on with this top. Removable panels mean you can still run open-air over the front seats on a summer drive to Jones Beach.
For Long Island winters this is the roof to have. It seals better than fabric against wind on the Southern State, it holds heat, and it shrugs off the wet snow that piles up in Levittown driveways. The trade-off is weight and the space you need to store the panels or the full top if you take it off. The molded top cannot be combined with the Black Appearance Package or the 60th Anniversary Package, both of which use painted tops.
Painted Hard Tops and Special Roofs
Outer Banks, Badlands and Raptor offer painted hard tops, either in body color, in a contrasting shade from the painted-roof program, or in Shadow Black. Every painted top includes the sound-deadening headliner and the rear defroster and washer, so cabin noise drops noticeably compared with the molded top. Our 2026 Bronco colors guide lists which roof colors pair with which body colors.
Special editions fix the roof color for you: the 60th Anniversary Package brings a Wimbledon White top, Heritage Edition an Oxford White top, and Stroppe Edition an Atlas Blue top. Big Bend can add the Shadow Black painted top, which is also the intended match for the Black Appearance Package across the lineup.
The Soft Top: Standard on Every 4-Door
The black cloth soft top is standard on all 4-Door Broncos and comes with a hard-top prep kit, so the wiring and mounts for a hard top are already in place. It also includes a rear-window defroster and washer. The soft top is lighter, folds down in minutes without tools, and needs no storage space when open.
In winter it is livable but not ideal. It is quieter than older fabric roofs and it seals well, but it will never insulate like a hard top, and clearing heavy snow off cloth takes care. If your Bronco is a year-round daily driver in Wantagh or Seaford, most owners end up wanting a hard top by January, which is exactly the problem Dual Tops solves.
Dual Tops: New for 2026
Dual Tops is a soft-top add-in: you order a hard top, and a black soft top is included in the vehicle for you to swap in when the weather turns. It is offered on 4-Door models only, requires one of the hard tops (molded, painted or Shadow Black depending on trim), and is available on Base, Big Bend, Outer Banks, Badlands and Heritage Edition.
It replaces last year’s pre-packaged dual-top combinations, which bundled specific hard-top colors with the black soft top. The new approach is simpler: pick any eligible hard top, add the soft top. One restriction to know: Dual Tops cannot be combined with the slide-out tailgate accessory. See the rest of the model-year changes in our 2026 Bronco what’s new guide.

Accessory tops add more options for beach days: a mesh shade bimini, a soft canvas bimini, and retractable full or front-row twill soft tops, though the retractable tops are not offered with the standard black cloth soft top. Roof rails with crossbars require a hard top. If you are also weighing body style, our 2-Door vs 4-Door guide explains how the roof choice interacts with it.

Which Roof Should a Long Island Buyer Choose?
Year-round daily driver, one vehicle: hard top, ideally a painted top for the quieter headliner. Add Dual Tops if you have garage space and want summer flexibility without an aftermarket purchase.
Summer beach truck with a second car: soft top. It is standard on 4-Doors, costs nothing extra, and drops in minutes for the drive out to Robert Moses.
2-Door buyers: the molded hard top is standard, and the soft top is not offered on 2-Doors, so the choice is the molded top versus a painted or Shadow Black top on Badlands. Safety equipment is the same regardless of roof; federal test results are posted at the NHTSA vehicle ratings site.
